Capital Area Golf Tournament in Honor of Maj. Megan McClung, USMC
This year’s Capital Area Tournament will be in honor of Maj. Megan McClung (KIA 6 Dec 2006, Al Anbar Province, Iraq).
Maj. Megan McClung was the Public Affairs Plans Officer at Camp Fallujah when she volunteered for duty with the Army’s 1st Brigade, 1st Armored Division, operating in Ramadi, notably the most dangerous area of operations in Iraq at the time. She was killed in action in Ramadi on December 6, 2006, when, while escorting media, her vehicle was hit by an improvised explosive device.

Megan was the first female Marine officer to be killed in Operation Iraqi Freedom, and the first female graduate of the United States Naval Academy to be killed in action since the school’s founding in 1845. A lifelong athlete, Meg was a gymnast and diver at the Naval Academy. Once in the Marine Corps, she turned to marathons and triathlons. She completed six Ironman races finishing as the 1st military female at the World Championships in Kona, HI in 2000. She is credited with organizing the first Marine Corps Marathon (Forward) at Al-Asad, Airbase in Iraq run by servicemen to honor their fallen comrades. For that event she initiated the Penguin award, which has been presented in her memory, to the last official runner to cross the finish line at the annual Marine Corps Marathon. Meg was a warrior, a scholar and a polished public affairs professional who coined the phrase “Be Bold. Be Brief. Be Gone.”
She epitomized what it meant to be a Marine. Whether you knew her for a few minutes or years, she made a lasting impression. She made a difference in this world. She gave all.
