Emily Truman
Ever since I was a little girl I have dreamed of attending college and pursuing opportunities in a wider world of career, family, and community. This dream has motivated me to persevere through struggles in school and to overcome trials which might have limited my potential.
My family has heavily influenced my decision to pursue a college degree and the limitless horizon which accompanies it. Even though my father has not yet earned a college degree, he
has always encouraged my pursuit of one. When he married
my mother, he set his college education on hold and joined
the military to support his family. As the family continued growing and the years passed, he continued to honorably serve so that he could responsibly provide for his family of ten.
Through experience, my father and mother both know that greater success in life can be accredited to a college degree. They encourage me to pursue a degree because they desire my future to be filled with limitless horizons. They have influenced me, and I have decided to earn a degree at Brigham Young University ... It has always been understood that ...
I would be responsible to fund it on my own. I have been employed part time as the desk receptionist at a local hotel for the past year. This income, along with other earnings, has all been deposited into a college savings fund. However, these savings in themselves cannot fund a college education. Consequently, in aspiring to earn a university degree without becoming seriously entrenched in debt, I am excited to receive a scholarship from the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation. I am hopeful that, with the support of this scholarship, I can earn a bachelor’s degree in History from Brigham Young University — a degree that will enhance my success in life by providing a limitless horizon.
Sincerely,
Emily Truman
