We’re looking for a FEW GOOD SPONSORS AND GOLFERS for the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation’s 13th Annual Capital Area Golf Tournament.

Once again, this year’s tournament will honor the memory of Robert M. Kelly. Robert was killed by a roadside bomb during a foot patrol in Helmand Province Afghanistan on November 9, 2010. At the time of his death, Robert was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force based in Camp Pendleton. It was his third combat deployment in what was already a distinguished military career.

Prior to his 2008 commissioning, Robert served two tours in Iraq as an enlisted Marine with “The Beirut Battalion” 1st Battalion, 8th Marines, serving with distinction as they led the assault on Fallujah during Operation Phantom Fury.

Fallujah served as a decisive strike against the Iraqi insurgency, but also showcased Marines at their best. At least eight Navy Crosses were awarded for the battle, more than any other single action in Iraq or Afghanistan; and 1/8 led the way.

When it was over, during combat operations in Iraq from June 2004 – Jan. 2005 1st Battalion 8th Marines suffered 21 Marines killed in action (KIA) and nearly 150 Marines wounded in action (WIA) with 17 KIA’s and 102 WIA’s coming in three weeks in Fallujah in November 2004.

Organized by friends and family who knew him best, each year the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation, dedicates its Capital Area Golf Tournament to Robert’s memory. For more than 6 years, funds raised through this event have provided thousands in scholarships to the children of Marines and Navy Corpsmen.

Each year, thanks to your support, Robert’s legacy of Honor, Courage and Commitment is at work in the lives of thousands of Marines sons and daughters receiving these need-based scholarships. Please consider our 2016 sponsorship options, and join us on September 26 to celebrate Robert’s life of service.
